Water Street is named for how close it is to the south shore of the Burrard Inlet. During the 1960s the wholesale business left Water Street because there was limited space and the real estate prices were rising. Then in the early to mid 20th century, Water Street was the center of Vancouver’s food, clothing, and dry goods businesses. Also much of the trading goods from East Asia went through Water Street because Vancouver was the main port of Western Canada. Water Street also housed heavy equipment for the coastal and interior lodging operations that British and American firms provided.
