Fountain Chapel was a church located at 823 Jackson Avenue from 1918 until 1985. The Fountain Chapel was co-founded by Nora Hendrix who is the grandmother of Jimmy Hendrix. The Fountain Chapel was established to serve the black community. Before it was established black Christians had to rent halls around town to hold services but eventually a small group decided they should have a permanent church of their own, so they set out to raise funds for the project. Once they had raised enough money they purchased the building on Jackson Avenue that was built in 1904 and was used as a church for the German and Scandinavian immigrants. Hogan’s Alley was the local, unofficial name for Park Lane. It is an alley that ran through the southwestern corner of Strathcona and it was the only neighbourhood in Vancouver with a substantial and concentrated black population. The Fountain Chapel became the black community’s spiritual and social heart, gathering place and centre for gospel singing. The building is important because it is the last surviving architectural reminder of Horgan’s Alley and the African Canadian community.
