The arch is a popular landmark in the northern part of Stanley park. The original arch was commonly used as a meeting place because of the shady roof. It was nicknamed “the Bowie arch”. The arch was built for the visit of Duke and Duchesses. The second arch that replaced the first arch was built into a more simple structure. It is still a popular gathering place and a lot of events happen around the arch. Whenever an event is happening in Stanley park, people would put up arches. Many lovers would carve out their initials on the wall to seal their love. The arch is loved by many generations of Vancouverite.
