June - September 1972
Spanish and British Explorers discover the heavily forested peninsula that then became Stanley Park.
May 1887
The Dominion Government agrees to lease the 400 hectares Government Reserve to the City of Vancouver for a nominal one dollar per year.
September 1888
Mayor David Opponheimer opens Stanley Park on the 27th.
January 1890
First elected Parks Board assumed office.
June 1909
A start to the park zoo.
April 1917
Seawall construction begins.
April 1936
Lost Lagoon Jubilee Fountain is finished construction.
March 31st 1937
Lion's Gate Bridge construction began
November 14th 1938
Lion's Gate Bridge opened.
June 1943
RCMP move into the park.
June 1956
Vancouver Acquarium opens
September 1960
Lord Stanley statue unveiled.
May 1970
Girl in a Wetsuit revealed.
May 1977
"Seawall project" to widen the seawall was announced.
September 21st 1980
Seawall around all of Stanley Park opens.
April 1993
US President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin visit the park.
December 1993
Stanley Park Zoo closes.
