That’s what they all say. I hear that almost every day now. The painter swore to me that he saw the ghost of an old man last week. Even Dad told me his co-worker, the sous-chef, was working late last night and heard pots and pans clanging in the kitchen. But when he went to investigate, all the sous-chef saw was a messy kitchen with misplaced pots and pans.
I don’t know why he was so scared, honestly. I can’t believe he ran out of the kitchen and the mansion like a spooked little chicken.
So what if restaurant customers saw a couple of levitating knives and forks? Ghosts aren’t real. --- The Mansion is haunted.
“I don’t believe it. They’re just silly little ghost stories,” I said to my younger brother. “You better believe it. One day, the ghosts might just come for you, then you’ll regret it!” “Ha! Ghosts AREN’T real!” He didn’t respond. He just shook his head then left to explore the mansion and do who knows what to pass time while we waited for Dad to finish his evening shift. --- The Mansion is haunted.
I’m starting to believe them. I was running down the halls as fast as I could but the echo of the ghost’s voice was still loud and clear.
THE MANSION IS HAUNTED.
I KNOW, I wanted to scream at it. The shadows around me seemed to elongate and loom over me. Light!A faint source could now be seen at the end of the hall. The entrance foyer was just within reach. I almost sighed in relief, thinking this horrible nightmare was almost over and I’d never have to set foot in this creepy mansion again.
I should’ve known I wouldn’t be lucky enough to escape it. --- The Mansion is haunted.
That’s the only explanation, everyone said to the victim’s younger brother. Strangely though, the younger brother wasn’t crying. He almost looked bored.
“What happened?”
He turned his head. A little girl was tugging on his jacket, innocent eyes filled with curiosity.
“My older brother was found dead. Murdered.”
“By who? Why was he murdered?”
The younger brother smiled coldly.
“Have you heard of the Gabriola’s original owner’s son? The younger one. They say he committed suicide by jumping out of a second storey window.”
“That’s horrible! Why would he do that?”
He shrugged.
“Who knows. What you should know though is that ghosts are real, and one thing’s for sure, the Mansion is haunted.”
