Born in Yorkshire, Samuel Brighouse is the cousin of John Morton, one of his fellow Greenhorns. He accompanied Morton across the Atlantic on the Great Eastern, bound for beautiful British Columbia. Brighouse made up one third of the Three Greenhorns, the three Englishmen responsible for kick-starting the development of the area we call West End nowadays.
In 1887, when the city was rebuilt after the Great Vancouver Fire, Brighouse became a member of Vancouver City Council. Brighouse went on to marry “a Spanish lady of noted beauty”. He died in 1913, in England, and was buried in his hometown of Lindley, Yorkshire. Written by Emily L. |
