You may have seen it before, but just didn’t know what it was at the time. It is fairly easily spotted since it is huge sundial on a podium.
Located at English Bay, near the foot of Denman Street, the George Cunningham Memorial Sundial was commissioned by George Torrance Cunningham and later unveiled in 1967. It was designed by Gerhard Class and is made of bronze and granite. The sundial was made to commemorate both the Three Greenhorns and the first drugstore of the Cunningham Drug Stores chain in 1911. Before starting his own chain of drugstores at the age of 21, G.T. Cunningham worked at Woodward’s Department Store. He was a part of Vancouver City Council and also served as the Chair of the UBC Board of Governors. His contributions to the city and the West End will always be remembered through the sundial and the elementary school named after him. Written by Emily L. |
